Historic Moments: 1974-83

Part three of a six-part series celebrating significant moments in the 60-year history of FCA.

January 1974: Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry begins a three-year stint as Chairman of FCA's National Board of Directors.

June 1974: FCA hosts its first girls' and junior high boys' camps at its National Resource Center near Marshall, Ind.

August 1975: FCA officially launches its first all-girl Huddles (briefly called "Cuddles").

June 1976: FCA Women's Program officially beings after receiving a $250,000 gift from Kansas City's Gladys Kelce. On June 15, Cindy Smith is selected to direct the program.

July 1976: Over 500 girls attend the first national FCA Girls Camp held at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.

January 1977: FCA Golf becomes FCA's first national sports-specific ministry.

February 1978: Ground is broken on FCA's National Support Center and Chapel in Kansas City, Mo.

May 1979: FCA's National Support Center and Chapel is dedicated. FCA founder Don McClanen, Dr. Louis Evans, "Deacon" Dan Towler and Tom Landry lead the dedication ceremony.

June 1979: FCA Golf hosts the first sport-specific FCA Camp at Pine Needles Country Club in Southern Pines, N.C.

October 1980: FCA President John Erickson throws the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3 of the 1980 World Series at Kansas City's Royals (now Kauffman) Stadium.
