God is moving in the dance program at Grand Canyon University (GCU) in Phoenix, and it’s becoming more and more obvious.
Coach Jacque Genung-Koch, nicknamed Coach GK, has been a vital part of ministry as she has partnered with Kelly Schmidt, FCA collegiate director for GCU, who serves as the team chaplain.
Schmidt leads the team every Wednesday in chapel once they finish practice. GCU is the only dance team in the United States with a dedicated chaplain.
Out of a desire to minister to young dancers, Coach GK partnered with FCA to offer dance at a camp for 7-12 graders. “This doesn’t exist anywhere for dance,” Coach GK said. Schmidt said the dance team is a good example of God opening doors to fulfill FCA’s mission to reach every coach and athlete. In the future, she hopes to offer dance at more camps and to include more dance coaches in Bible studies in the future. She said Coach GK’s support has been critical.
Over the past few years, the GCU dance team has won five national championships. Coach GK said other teams have approached her at competitions and asked what’s different about them. Knowing there is no difference in terms of training and skill, she knows the difference is Jesus. “We get to dance for something bigger than ourselves.”
