Digging Gospel Roots

Megan Fletcher still vividly remembers receiving her first Bible, a memory made possible by the generosity of FCA volunteers and donors.

She was a high school freshman in Murray, Neb. Playing a variety of sports including volleyball, basketball and soccer. Jason and Tasha Nolting led an FCA Huddle at the high school, and Fletcher attended one of the meetings. She saw a table full of Bibles, which included commentary especially for young athletes. The Noltings told her the Bibles were free, so she helped herself.

“I was interested in all the context information and questions the Bible asked that were really applicable to my life as a high school athlete,” Fletcher said. “God used that Bible to dig deeper Gospel roots in my heart and grow my relationship with Him.”

Tasha Nolting said Fletcher was spiritually hungry as a high school student. It was obvious God was pursuing her and opening her heart to have that hunger. Jason Nolting described her as a very studious person who exceled at her pursuits and was ready to learn about God.

“When she got to FCA, she was hungry to learn more, hungry to know more,” Jason said.

She continued her involvement in FCA through high school, attending a Weekend of Champions event during her junior year. While she was there, she felt God nudging her to make Him the Lord of her life at the event, and that is exactly what she did. Her faith has been growing ever since.

Fletcher went on to attend the University of Nebraska. While she didn’t play sports in college, she continued to apply the lessons she learned from FCA to her daily life. She said the importance of Christian community is one of the foundational lessons she learned from FCA. The ministry provided her with first-hand experience of the value of being part of such a community.

Today Fletcher is a pediatric physician’s assistant in Lincoln, Neb. and married to her college sweetheart Jon. While her life has changed over the years, she still looks back with gratitude for the spiritual foundation FCA gave her.

“I grew in my relationship with the Lord, and through FCA I learned that freedom and my identity isn’t in what I do,” Fletcher said. “My identity is in the work on the cross. That was transformational.”

The hunger the Noltings saw in her shaped the direction she took in her life and decisions she made. Fletcher continues to carry the Gospel into her career and relational interactions because she has made herself available to God.

Because of the impact FCA has had on her life, Fletcher encourages others to support the ministry financially.

“Financially partnering with FCA is important because it created an opportunity in my life to be handed a Bible,” Fletcher said. “That was so applicable to my situation as a high school student who was involved in sports.”

Fletcher and her husband first became ministry donors when his sister, who also happens to be named Megan Fletcher, joined staff with FCA. They began supporting her. Today that Megan Fletcher is the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Female Sports Representative. She said her sister-in-law’s story reminds her of the importance of planting Gospel seeds. The ministry provides opportunities for others to faithfully water those seeds and everyone to trust God with the results.

“Megan’s story reminds and encourages me that we serve a God who is not confined to work in specific circumstances, so an investment in FCA, no matter how big or small, will always be helping to make a difference eternally,” her sister-in-law said.

Fletcher continues to go to fundraising dinners and other FCA events to show ongoing support of the ministry. She encourages others to volunteer time as she reflects on how pivotal that Weekend of Champions was for her own faith journey. She recognizes how her own growth would not have been possible without the faithful service of FCA volunteers.

Megan Fletcher, University of Nebraska – Lincoln Women’s Sports Representative, asks for prayer for fruitful camps and follow-up in the Lincoln, Neb. area. Her prayer is that the Gospel message presented at camps will empower coaches and athletes at their schools. She also requests prayer for preparations for the next school semester.
