Bowden Presents Award During FCA Breakfast at the Allstate Bowl Championship game site January 5, 2010.
(Kansas City, MO) – The Fellowship of Christian Athletes selected Colt McCoy as the recipient of the 2009 FCA Bobby Bowden Athlete of the Year. McCoy received the seventh annual award from Coach Bobby Bowden on Tuesday, January 5th, during the FCA Breakfast at the Allstate Bowl Championship Series game site in Pasadena.
McCoy is a four year letterman, the 2009 Maxwell Award winner and a Heisman runner-up. He has a 3.2 GPA and is working on a degree in Sports Management. Tim Tebow from the University of Florida and Antonio Coleman from Auburn University were also finalists for this year’s award.
Named after the legendary and just retired Florida State University football coach, who has been very involved in FCA throughout his long career, the Bobby Bowden Athlete of the Year award recognizes the Division IA football player who epitomizes the student-athlete who conducts himself as a faith model in the community, in the classroom and on the field. Nominees must have a 3.0 GPA or better.
FCA President and CEO, Les Steckel, said of this award and recipient, "While Colt McCoy’s athletic skills are clearly outstanding, as a young man, he is already an exemplary role model in faith, character and community service, and it is an honor for FCA to recognize him with this prestigious award."
Past winners from the award’s inception include Jason Wright (Northwestern University and Arizona Cardinals), Billy Bajema (Oklahoma State University and San Francisco 49ers), D.J. Shockley (University of Georgia and Atlanta Falcons), Carl Pendleton (University of Oklahoma), and Jacob Tamme (University of Kentucky and Indianapolis Colts) and Stephen McGee (Texas A&M and Dallas Cowboys).
