Newly minted two-time Olympic gold medalist Tobin Heath is a powerful force on the soccer field and most importantly, for Jesus Christ. As one of the most skilled players on the U.S. Women’s National Team, Tobin was named U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year in 2009 and was the youngest member of Team USA’s previous Olympic gold medal team in 2008.
Tobin’s journey into the professional ranks is uniquely intertwined with her journey of faith. “I started playing soccer at four years old.As I grew up and matured in my sport, I was also maturing in my faith. I’ve had divinely-orchestrated relationships that have been put in my path, and as my passion for soccer has continued to grow, my passion for Jesus has grown as well.”
While at the University of North Carolina, Heath was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team and finished her UNC career with 19 goals and 32 assists, leading UNC to its second straight NCAA title. Along with her college success, Heath’s biggest highlight was becoming a follower of Jesus Christ.
“I didn’t know Jesus personally until my early college years, when He really demanded my whole life. I always associated being a Christian as something separate, but it was my freshman year that being a Christian wasn’t just a part of me, it became who I am and what I was living for.”
Heath’s passion for Jesus Christ has grown since joining the National Team. “Jesus took over, and He started not only transforming my life, but transforming the lives of people around me and the teams that I was a part of.He redeemed my life and gave me purpose, so that I wasn’t just an athlete who based her life on performance, but my worth was in Him.
“That understanding is the greatest transformation that happened in my life. When I met the real Savior, I was humbled by how great and powerful our God is.There’s a point on your path when you humbly get on your knees and no longer just want to know Him, but you need to know Him.You need to have Jesus in your life, because that’s the foundation for who you are and for whom you were created.”
