Introduction: "No man can discover God; God is revealed. The only way you can know about God is what He is pleased to reveal of Himself to us. I have come to the conclusion that He has revealed very little of Himself to us. In fact, the little that He has revealed to us has some of us so awestruck and some so confused that we can see why He hasn’t revealed more of Himself to us. You cannot ‘find out God’ by starting out like a Columbus in search of Him. Nor can you find God by going into space in a sputnik. I recalled that the Russians published in their paper the fact that they hadn’t discovered God in the early days of space exploration, and so they assumed He was not there. We can put little gadgets out in space, but they won’t find God. To think that they could find Him is absurd! Man cannot look through a microscope or out into the heavens through a telescope and discover God. God must reveal Himself to man."–J. Vernon McGee
God is infinite in that He exists outside of time and space. In the scoreboard-oriented world of FCA, where clocks and numbers tell the story of so many of our athletic experiences, what would be some ways for us to get out of the box and grab hold of the God who is infinite?
Read Genesis 1:16 and Genesis 15:5. The same God who created the stars asked one man, Abram, to count them. Abram, of course, was no fool. Instead of counting, he chose to believe (verse 6). What can we learn from this, in terms of who God is and who man is?
Read Isaiah 40:26-31. The last part of this passage, about soaring on wings like eagles, has been an FCA favorite down through the years, but it’s good to check it out in its context. What are some of your reflections on this passage? What attributes of God jump out at you?
Read Job 9:1-10 and Job 11:7-9. What should be our response before a God who performs wonders that cannot be fathomed and miracles that cannot be counted? How well have you been praising and worshiping this God, the infinite God, lately?
Sinning against an infinite God is an infinite offense, which should make anyone who is not in Christ tremble. However, once we have had our sins forgiven by the blood of the Savior, we find that God has infinite, or unlimited, resources to help us. How have you sensed this infinite comfort of God in your life?
Memory verse: "Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit."–Psalm 147:5
Conclusion: "Great God! How infinite art Thou! What worthless dust are we! Let the whole race of creatures bow and pay their praise to Thee! Thy throne eternal ages stood ere seas or stars were made. Thou art the ever-living God, were all the nations dead. Eternity, with all its years, stands present in Thy view. To Thee there’s nothing old appears–Great God! There’s nothing new! Our lives through various scenes are drawn and vexed with trifling cares. While Thine eternal thought moves on Thine undisturbed affairs. Great God! How infinite art Thou! What worthless dust are we; Let the whole race of creatures bow and pay their praise to Thee!"–Isaac Watts
