Study No. 9: Peace

Fellowship of Christian Athletes -

Greek = eirene. Peace, prosperity, one, quietness, rest.

Introduction: "God’s mark of approval, whenever you obey Him, is peace. He sends an immeasurable, deep peace; not a natural peace, as the world gives, but the peace of Jesus. Whenever peace does not come, wait until it does, or seek to find out why it is not coming. If you are acting on your own impulse, or out of a sense of the heroic, to be seen by others, the peace of Jesus will not exhibit itself. This shows no unity with God, or confidence in Him. The spirit of simplicity, clarity and unity is born through the Holy Spirit, not through your decisions." — Oswald Chambers

  1. The hippies of the 1960s were noted for their laid-back slogan of "Peace, man." They tried to put flowers in guns, but war still exists. Were the hippies nothing more than pie-in-the-sky dreamers, or is a form of peace actually possible on this planet? How about total peace?

  2. Read Numbers 25:1-18, Isaiah 54:10 and Ezekiel 37:26. What images come to mind when you think about a covenant of peace?

  3. Read John 14:27 and Ephesians 2:14. In a moment of silence, meditate on these truths. After that moment of silence, talk about how your FCA Huddle might practice the peace of Christ.

  4. Read Hebrews 12:14. In a world filled with warfare, this can be hard to do. How can we practice peace with all men in our daily lives, especially when people are opposing us?

  5. Billy Graham identifies two time-tested formulas for peace with God in Psalm 37:1-5 and Philippians 4:6-7. It’s hard to top Billy Graham, but what might be a better formula for peace as found in the Bible? Talk about the wisdom and the practical application of these verses.

Memory verse: "For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace."–Romans 8:6

Conclusion: "Many Christians have peace with God but have never gone on to experience the peace of God in their lives. They are torn with anxieties and fears that destroy spiritual stability and joy in the Lord. Peace is a gift from God and the rightful legacy of all believers, but far too many do not enjoy it. The peace of God flows from a full, unhindered fellowship with Him who is our peace."–The Billy Graham Christian Worker’s Handbook
